The Johnson American Bulldog

The Johnson American Bulldog is a breed of dog unlike any other; their sheer strength and courage coupled with their undying loyalty and devotion make them the ultimate breed of dog for the general public and serious canine enthusiast alike. The modern American Bulldog is believed to have descended from the colossus breeds of ancient history similar to other mastiff breeds. The American Bulldogs earliest history is virtually unknown and little if any recorded records exist. The first documented history relating to the American Bulldog was during the late 19th century. Dogs resembling today’s American Bulldogs were used in Europe, specifically England, as "butcher dogs" and guardians. These dogs were by no means pets, but rather utility dogs bred and raised for specific duties. These duties included baiting unruly cattle and swine along with guarding property against thievery. These tasks required a dog that feared no man or beast alive, but was still loyal and obedient to their master and keeper. These traits still exist with the Johnson, and Johnson type American Bulldog.

Since the early "butcher dogs" the American Bulldog had nearly gone extinct and until recently experienced an evolutionary rebirth. This rebirth is due in large part to two dedicated individuals; John D. Johnson and Mildred L. Johnson. In the mid 1940’s, John D., as he is known to friends, began collecting the best representations of Bulldogs he remembered from his youth. John D. was also instrumental in renaming the breed from American Pit Bulldog to American Bulldog. He was also the first breeder to have his dogs officially registered. Aside from these accomplishments it was John and Mildred’s breeding program that had the greatest impact in the preservation of the American Bulldog. They were pivotal in creating the legendary bloodlines of Dick the Bruiser, Big Buck, Rebel Rouser, The Machines and many more. It was their female lines of Collettes, Sugar Dolls and Sugar Tuffies that when bred produced the big boned pups that mature into the 100 lbs. "The real American Bulldogs" Johnson is known for.

The American Bulldog's character is alert and inquisitive, bold and fearless without being hostile or overly aggressive. His very stable temperament makes him an outstanding companion dog and home guard dog, protective of his family. He works well with other breeds and gets along with other pets if raised with them. He is not the type of dog to wait for a command, but can assess the situation by himself and react appropriately and concentrate on the task at hand without being distracted. Yet when called off by their owner, they immediately obey.

About Gold Ridge Kennels

We are located in the heart of North Alabama in Cullman county. We have lived here for nearly 20 years and recently started breeding this amazing animal. I (Cody Lancaster) was first introduced to this breed in South Carolina about 2006. I was in the Marine Corp at the time and a fellow marine owned a few and bred them. I bought one not knowing that I would love grow extremely attached. I did a lot of research about the bread and learned a lot of interesting facts. I am amazed that the bulldog is still alive today, thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Johnson who brought the breed back into existence only breeding the best of the best which is evident still today.

The kennel is a small family kennel and is nothing close to being called a "dog farm". I almost do not want to call it a kennel, more of a home with one too many bulldogs! My bulldogs are surrounded by the love of family, kids, and other animals. I raise these dogs for companionship and protection, not for fighting or any abuse type features.

The most asked question I receive is, how are they with kids? To be honest every dog is different. Being a large breed, the will tend to accidently knock a small child over, but overall are very gentle and patient with children. Little ones who like to pull and poke at a dog can be dangerous, however I have seen several Johnson Bulldogs around kids that have tolerances to these gestures. As long as this animal is not abused and consistently threatened or harmed by children, these bulldogs will love and protect the child from harm. Again, the temperament of this breed is one of the main attributes. It is bred to be a family dog, protect its family and property, and enjoy the company of its pack. That is a popular quality of the Johnson bloodline that breeder's and enthusiast keep to continue a legacy of the Johnson bloodline.
